A reason to do it would be to ward off predators if they get close. Sometimes they also pee on them.
Another reason would be to throw them off. Lets say a hungry predator picks up a scent of what it thinks is a monkey and follows it. Instead of following it to the tree or whatever the monkey lives in instead it'll follow the scent to an empty tree. The predator may try and climb or preoccupy itself with the tree which allows the monkey a chance to escape.
