How do you praise someone for saving his sister from drowning?

Someone special saved his 6 year sister from drowning in a pond. He battled wearing a jacket that got heavy from getting water soaked . He doesn't realize how special he is, and how courageous he was. She is blessed to have a guardian angel brother like him.

Just tell him "Wow." Just wow, how great of you or something--but I wouldn't start trying to tell him how 'special' he is or how 'courageous' he is. Words like this often make people who perform heroic acts feel guilty because they don't consider themselves 'special' or 'courageous.' He didn't save her because he was special or courageous, he saved her because he just happened to be there when his sister started to drown and it fell into his hands to save her, wet jacket or not. In a 'hero's' mind he did what he had to do--specialness and courage had nothing to do with it.

Get him a thank you card and bring that card with your sister.

  • I would tell him, "Every day is a gift you have given your sister."
