My wife and I will traveling around the USA next year and want to know if any could some suggestions on how much money we would need every day to feed 2 people. I was thinking approximately $100 not including the nights where ate at more high end restaurants

Really the best way to figure that out is to figure out where in the US you will be at a given time and look at local restaurant prices in that place. Prices in large cities will not be dramatically different but prices between large cities and smaller towns can be significantly cheaper. Also, do you plan on eating 'out' for every meal or will you go to a grocer to purchase food for lets say lunches, eat breakfast at the hotel (which many offer as part of the room cost) and then just out for dinner? You could purchase food for lunch for a week for to for the same as one lunch in a restaurant would cost.

Many hotels serve a free light breakfast to guests.
$100 per day for the two of you for three meals is $16 for each meal. I think you will find you need a bit more than that. Dinner at even a regular restaurant will be more than $16. Eating at a fast food restaurant will be about $10 per meal. If you are at a regular restaurant you need to tip and there is tax. I just had lunch at Applebee's. My lunch was $8.99. I gave a tip of 20% and tax was just under 8%. Tip 15%-20% of the total bill
Tax will be on everything you buy. Tax rate varies from county to county.
Drinking alcohol adds greatly to your bill.

From personal experience traveling on several continents, eating in the USA is pretty cheap. We grow all the food we need and taxes are low here, especially on food.

Well $100 a day would give you a high end food experience, if just 2 of you. Most entrees in most restuarants are under $15 and breakfasts would be cheaper than that.

Depends on how you plan on eating. Figure $10-15 per person per day for breakfast and lunch. Double that for dinner. Then factor in snacks and deserts.
Some hotels include a continental breakfast in your stay. You can go to the grocery stores and purchase simple fixings for lunches.

Use the big mac guide. It is reasonably accurate Gives you the cost of a big mac any place in the world. Same world over going high price to low price on dinning.

As an average that is plenty. Of course you can spend that on one meal, if you want to. As was said, many if not most decent hotels serve a communal breakfast, which can be better or worse but the price is right.

I've grown up here in the US and I think you'll get off just fine with $100 and will probably not even use it all in one day.
