Is my son allergic to pet parakeet?
Hello my main question is how long would it take before symptoms of an allergy to birds develop?
We just got a pet parakeet a week ago and last night I had to rush my son to the ER because he was coughing and complaining he couldn t breathe.
The pet bird is in his bedroom.
The drs told me it was croup (a viral infection ).
I didn t realize a person could be allerigc to birds. So I didn t mention it to the doctors.
Any advice is appreciated.

Croup has a characteristic sounding cough - is this why it was diagnosed as croup? I don't necessarily agree with the other people who have answered because allergies to pets can be very bad and can be apparent immediately, even in the case of a parakeet. Was an X-ray taken? Did the doctor just simply state it was croup? It really depends on how your doctor diagnosed it, but realize that allergies to the bird can be severe and can include coughing, difficulty breathing, runny nose, congestion, wheezing, red eyes. If he starts to get worse or stays in the same in about a week, it may be something else. Definitely go back to the doctor if he starts to feel worse and let them know about the bird. Unless they knew about the bird, they are unlikely to consider an allergy as a diagnosis.

A bird doesn't cause a viral infection. Your son has the croup, a common childhood sickness, which will go away.and is not related to parakeets in any way, If, after he recovers, you wish to know if he is allergic to birds, you take him to an allergy doctor for testing. That is the only way to know if he is allergic to birds. Exposure to pets at an early age has been shown to prevent allergies.

A budgie parakeet isn't usually a "powdery" bird that causes allergies, but remove the cage from his bedroom immediately. If the bird is returnable, do it, and explain why. If not, wait a few days to see how it goes. Your son should not go near the cage, or interact with the bird right now.

If the doctors said it was croup, then that's what it is. A first year med student can tell an allergy from a viral respiratory thing at 30 paces.
