can someone explain England's Brexit?

im American all I know is what ive seen on twitter

the british people aren't happy it happened even though they voted for it (It seems its mostly young adults complaining)

it has something to do with England & the European union or the euro????

for the past few weeks ive seen a variety of tweets saying things (mostly directed at young adults) like '' America vote on election day, we didn't and brexit happened''

also England is apart of Europe so why would there even be a vote for them to leave it or whatever?

wouldn't that be like if Canada too a vote to leave north America?

somepne please explain thank you

Update:

I copied this tweet it an example of what ive been seeing lately:

Dear USA

I know we didn't listen to the rest of the world about Brexit

But please be smarter than us!

More people voted to leave the EU than have voted for anything else in our history - we are leaving because we don't want to be dictated to by unelected self serving corrupt politicians. The EU will collapse in the next 12 months and they know it!

Also , it was always what Britain wanted , certain people keep breaking it down into how towns or cities voted - absolute bollocks - totally irrelevant what Glasgow voted for because that was never the question!

We have had a referendum with a record turnout and we are leaving the EU. Simple as that.

Decisions such as the 'single market' are a routine part of the leaving process

Make no mistake we are leaving despite the confusion spread by sore losers

Citizenship in any EU country equals a work visa in every EU country. That effectively means citizenship in any EU country means the right to move to any other EU country.

In the US we have had unlimited mobility state to state ever since the Constitution was ratified, so we tend to be unimpressed by the issue. But we've also had over two centuries for the culture to switch from very different states to one partially uniform country. Europe has resisted uniform culture.

@Mercury: the questioner is correct. It IS England leaving. I am Scottish. We in Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain a part of the EU. We were dragged out of Europe by the English right-wing who like the the American right wing relish division and fear. So it is not in our name the Brexit debacle. Scotland is a sovereign nation like any other and our democratic right cannot be allowed to be overlooked just because the population of our foreign English cross-border race are superior in numbers and of a completely different political persuasion. Unacceptable. Independence referendum 2 is on the way.

I don't think anything can be explained to an individual that's too lazy to do basic research

Brexit proved that the Brits are not much different from Americans in terms of level of xenophobia.
