How can solubility be used to identify an unknown substance?

    Solubility alone will not allow identification but it is used as contributory evidence. For example if you had a water soluble white solid:

    Reference to tables will tell you that several white solids are water insoluble eg silver chloride, calcium sulfate, lead chloride so your sample cannot be any of those but you can't identify it fully from that evidence alone.
