Why isn't a president elected by popular vote?

Proponents of the Electoral College claim that it prevents a candidate from winning the presidency by simply winning in heavily populated urban areas, and pushes candidates to make a wider geographic appeal than they would if they simply had to win the national popular vote. They believe that adoption of the popular vote would shift the disproportionate focus to large cities at the expense of rural areas.

Because that would give all power to the states with the largest populations. It is the same reason that the Senate gives two seats to each state. It is a balance of power thing. Our founding fathers were very concerned that bigger states would rule the country and small states would have no say in our politics.

Does that make sense to you?

Because some states are weighted more based on the population. Would you think that Rhode Island should have such an important say in things as a state as California, by instance?

let me put it this way....

would this be a better country if every city and town had the same chain restaurants and fast-food joints? would we be a better culture if we only had top 40 radio and movies based on comic books?

do you like tacos? BBQ? soul food? new england clam chowder? what if I told you we had to get rid of any food considered "regional" for the good of our nation?

should farmers in Iowa determine how NYC spends its infrastructure money? should New Hampshire residents dictate English proficiency requirements for California high school students?

are you one of those people who thinks that "diversity" is a good thing? if so, consider the words of these two people:

person A who says "diversity must be respected and our challenge is to uphold a system where all values have a place."

or person B who says "the only acceptable form of democracy is for the majority to rule always.... minorities must conform or be ignored."

now.... which of these two would you call the more "progressive" thinker?....and would you call this thinking "outdated?"

Because the framers of the Constitution knew that the population as a whole is too stupid to be trusted to make such decisions. For example, it that was the case we would have been stuck with Hillary instead of Trump.

Because the people can't be trusted to vote the right way.

Because we are a representative republic not ruled by mobs.
