If you are interested in programming, try it out. Formal training for software engineering doesn't really begin until college, though many high schools offer introductory programming classes. It really is a good idea to find out if you really like writing code before committing both time and lots of money to a college career.

Meanwhile, try not to limit yourself to just one idea of your future. Even if you do become a software engineer some day, knowing how "the rest of the world" thinks and works is important. Most computer software is used by non-programmers.

Many of the best programmers I've worked with over the years came from non-software majors such as physics, engineering or mathematics. Even a couple of music majors: I've noticed that instrumental musicians tend to be more likely to be good programmers that the "average" citizen.

Pros: The job is technical, but an expression of creativity.

Modest pay, usually well above poverty line.

Permanent jobs usually have strong benefits packages and flexible schedules.

Industry is moving more and more toward short work weeks with no pay reduction.

Can begin career with an Undergraduate or Associates degree, though Bachelors or greater preferred.

    Cons:

Saturated market, particularly in America as many of the jobs are outsourced to India or other cheap-labor alternatives, causing salaries and position counts to drop.

Interviews often involve a test of programming skills; this is really just to see how well you conform to their methods, and makes the interview process more difficult.

Good jobs require moving to them; jobs are often centralized in major cities

Perpetual education required; a college graduate is usually already 2-3 years behind the current state of the industry, and self-education outside of the workplace is a necessary constant.

Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it. Study hard now so college won't be difficult for you. Finish college fast so you won't lose sight of what you wanted in the first place.
