Companies like Givi, Oxford, Kreiga, SW Motech, Magadan, Richa, Kappa, etc. all make removable soft luggage (pannier bags or throwovers, as we call them in the U.K.) that are large enough to carry a crash helmet. You'd have to check if they offer anything specifically for your Sportster, though.
