New to RV camping. How much can i safely tow?
I own a 2005 GMC 1500 Z71 with towing package. It is the four door 4X4 as well. I also own a 09 coachman adrenaline surge 29ft. The camper weighs a little over 7500lbs according to RV world. Best i can tell my truck is rated for 9600lbs and my hitch for 12,000lbs. We went from NY to AR with no problems related to towing. I am now looking at a wildcat or similar size side by side UTV to put in the toy hauler they are listed @ 1300lbs. So if my math is right there is around 800lbs to spare but i know it may not be so simple...... I will be using trailer braking system and Blue ox weight distributing / anti sway hitch. FYI we are planing a trip from Arkansas to Nevada to ride with some family there.

Your truck MAY have been rated for towing 9600 lbs when it was BRAND NEW, with perfect brakes, tires and suspension. Now, it's 12 years old, and all those things are worn and MAY not be as reliable as they were when new. Your trailer may also have a DRY weight of 7500 lbs, but once you get it loaded with food, water and all the rest of the stuff people load into their campers for a long trip, I'm betting you are a lot closer to maximum capacity than you once were. Don't forget that you are going to have to tow through some pretty rugged country to get to Nevada, and that also puts an extra strain on your truck and trailer.
Not saying that it can't be done, but you need to be extra careful and make sure your equipment is in 100% perfect condition before you start this trip.
