What happens if you never take a day off of work?

Like your job gives you vacation days but you don t use them and ever when you re sick, you still go to work. What happens? Is it mandatory for employers to give workers days off? Do those non-vacation days build up?

Where I worked a person earned a certain # of hours of vacation time every payday - from 4 hours a payday to 8 hours a payday depending upon how long they worked there. If a person had more than 240 hours of accumulated vacation time when the new year began then they lost the excess (over 240 hours). They must have used the excess before Jan 1st of each year. Use it or lose it.

As far as sick time was concerned we could earn no more than 4 hours a payday no matter how long you had worked there. And sick time accumulated; there was no use it or lose it. I worked with a man who had a serious heart attack when he was in his late 50s; he was off more than six months and it was all paid for because he was sick so seldom. Many companies have short-term disability pay program instead.

In your case? How are we to know? What is your company's policy?

What is required by law really depends on the State, if in the USA. In California, for example, vacation days are considered part of compensation, and cannot generally be lost, once earned. So if someone accumulates X days of vacation on the books, they must be paid in cash when they leave. Some other states are like that (Montana, I think...), but even in states that don't require it, company policy is free to do something like that which is beneficial to the employee.

Vacation says are not required by law. There are a couple of states that require you not to work 7 days a week.

Some companies will allow you to build them up. Others require they be used or lost.

My company has a use it or lose it policy which refreshes on your hire date each year. If you don't use your vacation you lose it. If you don't use your sick days they "max out" at thirty (this after two years). We are closed on weekends .
