What the **** is a mermaid?
So I was doing an art project, right, and the subject matter I chose was a mermaid, right? That got me thinking; would mermaids have gills because they're half fish, or would they have lungs because they're have human? Then I decided that mermaids probably have lungs that adapted to breathing more water than air, and that they could be like dolphins and can breathe oxygen, but still need water...so from there I thought that, would it make them half fish or a full mammal...? Can a creature be a half a mammal? You'd have to look at the anatomy of the creature to confirm, but nobody knows if mermaids exist or not, and I can't just ASK a mermaid, which is why I'm here. So what the hell is a mermaid, what is its anatomy supposed to be, things like that I guess? If you're a mermaid, please answer because I want answers.

Mermaids are mythical creatures. They do not exist. As they are mythical, you can give them any attributes you think fit.

You can't do that, dummy. It just doesn't work.
You can't take a fantasy and then make it fit the rules of reality. If you start doing that, you'll never stop. Forget mermaids, you'll go on and on forever. Watch this...
Ain't no gravity in space, so how come people on the Millennium Falcon walk on the floor instead of floating around? What kind of tires does the General Lee have that can squeal on a dirt road? How does Batman always know what tools to pack on that little belt of his? How does Superman get his cape to flap in the wind when he flies through outer space, since there's no air in outer space? Better yet, Superman is usually clean shaven, so what kind of razor is required to shave the man of steel?
Ooh, speaking of shaving, let's go back to mermaids. Why are their pits always so smooth? They can't use hot wax in the ocean, any blades they have would rust in saltwater, and don't even think of plugging in an electric clipper, so what the feck? Why don't mermaids all look like they have Bob Marley in a headlock?
See what I mean? You can't get all science-y with fantasies. That's why they're called fantasies, and reality is called reality. There is only one solution to your predicament: Just shut up and enjoy the fantasy.

Man from Atlantis was an American science fiction television series that ran for 13 episodes on the NBC network during the 1977–1978 season. The series stars Patrick Duffy as an amnesiac man given the name of Mark Harris, believed to be the only surviving citizen of the lost civilization of Atlantis. He possesses exceptional abilities, including the ability to breathe underwater because he has gills, not lungs.

Mermaids being purely myth and imaginary can breathe any way that the person
imagining them wishes.
I do not have an opinion on something that does not exist.
