Decorating a wooden box.?

I am decorating a wooden box and want to burn a design into it and stain it. Would I burn in the design and then stain it or stain the box then burn it? Or does it even matter?

    I would think stain 1st then burn. Try both ways on a piece of scrap wood to see each result.

    I would burn then stain. If you stain first, you may burn the stain and ruin the look that you are trying to attain.
