I've lost track of how many PMC questions I've answered lately, but the common theme seems to be that most people have no idea how they operate.

The vast majority of people employed by these companies are from third world countries and make a few hundred bucks a month, working crappy hours and living in crappy conditions.

The only good paying jobs are supervisory, require some sort of training/certification, or require a security clearance.

Even a lot of the 'gun toters' are TCNs. When I oversaw the contractor security force at a base in the middle east, all of the static guards came from Africa. Most of the mobile security teams were Ghurkas. The only Americans and Brits (and I think one South African) were the supervisors, dog handlers, a few of the team leaders for mobile security, and BDOC staff (including people running most of the security equipment). Those folks had backgrounds in combat arms and military police/security forces or civilian LE/security.

Out of all the other jobs out there held by Americans, they were mostly skilled trades, supervision of support activities (chow hall, laundry, MWR, etc), fire/rescue, medical, and logistics (running warehouses, managing property books, managing transportation, etc).
