What sort of a job can I make 1635 dollars a month during college?

I drafted a budget sheet for living on my own. My senior year at high school ends in May and I live in West Michigan. I was thinking about working in a Smoke Shop.

This means you need to make about $500 a week (I'm taking off for taxes). That comes down to $100 a day and, if you work 40 hours a week, then you need a job that pays around $12.50 an hour. If you don't have a college degree, skills in a particular area that is of use in your job market, or a good friend/relative that will hire you for more money than most people would get, then you might very well have a problem.

Some waitressing jobs will pay more than $12.50 an hour; most won't (especially if you don't have a lot of experience). Smoke shops usually don't pay that well either unless you are the manager.

Really, with just a high school diploma, making $12.50 an hour when you have little or no experience is going to be very difficult. Of course, there is (obviously) another problem. If you are working 40 hours a week, you'll only be able to go to college part-time.

Honestly, what I suggest is this:

    1) If it is at all possible, keep living with your parents. Then you can work just part-time and go to college full-time.

    2) If it is not possible to live with your parents, take out a loan to help with your college expenses. Then, too, you'd be able to work just part-time and go to college full time.

Students who go to college full-time have a much higher graduation rate than students who go only part-time. In addition, they tend to do much better. So, I recommend you do either #1 or #2 and concentrate on your education. Your idea of making some money is a good one. I worked straight through college and, when I got my graduate degree, I worked then, too. But working full-time is much too hard. Part-time is the way to go.

    Good luck to you!

Technically, you need to make more than $1,650 a month, since there will be taxes withheld from what you make - your will probably have to earn closer to $2,000 a month to allow for federal, state, Social Security and Medicare That's about taxes.$15 - $16 an hour full time. A full time job is extremely difficult to handle at the same time as being a full time student.

You will need a full time (40 hours) $500/week job before taxes to maintain your budget. Next you have to work on a time budget to permit working, classes, studying and sleeping. A near impossibility.

While there are possible jobs for college students (see http://bitly.com/1jzSWaJ), there won't be much that will pay as much as the target amount you need unless you work more hours (which will affect school and study time).
