Could Donald Trump beat Barack Obama?

Yes, Trump beat Hillary! But he knew better than to run against Obama! Obama would have wiped the floor with Trump during this election!

    Most likely true. Some of the post-mortem I've read about on this election suggests that the breaking of the midwest "blue wall" wasn't entirely Hillary's fault. Long term trends are that this region had been getting redder over time. This just happened to be the election when it flipped.

    However, Obama, for all my many, MANY criticisms of him, was an OUTSTANDING campaigner. Probably the best in a long while. There can be no doubt he would have motivated the Democratic base to show up in force in a way that Hillary definitely didn't. And it seems unlikely that, given the narrow margins that won those swing states, that Trump's victory would have survived that effect.
