How would you know if you had a hole in your intestine, the small one, or large one?

for example, how would you know if there was a hole in your intenstine(s) if you swallowed something that you shouldn't have swallowed (like something sharp, plastic etc), and when to go to the docs?

Update:

I've read all these articles about how swallowing sharp plastic will poke a hole in your intenstine, which freaked me out, knowing i did that. so just wanting to know, thanks

Believe you me, you'd know. You'd be in severe pain, contents of your intestines would spill out into the rest of your abdomen and inflame them, making you feel very sick and unwell.

Extreme pain that would double you over. If you feel well enough to write this, you are not in that much pain. The stomach has an acid that would dissolve most objects that make it that far.

you would become deathly ill with peritonitis. Your system would quickly become infected. Trust me, you'd KNOW. This is what Harry Houdini died from. His appendix ruptured and he developed an infection.

Your blood pressure will drop severely, and you will need a blood transfusion.
