Can a car battery be jumped while out of the vehicle?
My truck wouldn't start and it had symptoms the day before it died (long start, seemed noticeably weak when i drove it around the block the day before.)
but my driveway is long and 1 car wide and on a hill, so i was wondering if i take my battery out of my truck, can i just carry it back to my booster car and jump it while it's out of my vehicle? i think my battery may be done for but i still want to check. i checked it with my Klein multimeter and got a reading of 11.5v DC google says anything under 12.6 is no bueno. i want to see if it can be jumped or if it's toast. buti was wondering does it need to be in my truck to be boosted?

You could charge the battery out of the car, but that wouldn't be jumping it. You would need a full charge before putting it back in the vehicle, so hooking it up to another car like a jump start wouldn't do it unless you let it sit there idling and charging up the battery for a good long time. And that's assuming the battery will actually hold a charge. Best way would be to get a trickle charger. They're cheap and simple, you can pull the battery, bring it in your house, hook it up to the trickle charger(they plug into a wall socket) and let it charge overnight. Or they have jump boxes you could buy(bit more expensive than a trickle charger). Then you wouldn't need the second car. The jump box plugs into your wall socket at home to charge up, then you can keep it in your car and jump a dead battery with it. You'll probably need to charge it up again after each jump, or if you let it sit for more than a few weeks you'll want to take it out and charge it.

Anything under 12.8 V means that battery is discharged. You have to charge it and test the voltage under load to determine if the battery is bad. You can charge the battery from another vehicle, but it will take a while. Take your battery to a shop, they can charge it and test it and determine if the battery is bad. P.S. A maintenance charger will not charge a battery before hell freezes over.

If the battery is dead you don't remove it and "jump it" You remove it and put it on a battery charger set to 12 volts, 10 amps and charge it for at least 6 hours.

Yes, it has to be in the vehicle. Jump starting a car is transferring power from a running engine into the starter of a low battery engine.
Better solution. Use a battery charger to charge the low/dead battery. Or smarter, take it to any parts store and they will charge it for free. And they can test it for dead any dead cells to see if it needs to be replaced.
It could also be something besides your battery such as dirty or bad connectors, bad cables, worn out starter brushes, alternator, etc.
