How to get Saturdays off from work?
Hey guys, I started a new job in construction plumbing, Im only 17, when i applied for this job and during the interview process it was never mention anywhere whatsoever that working a half day Saturday was a requirement, it wasn't till i started the job that the other employees told me that we work Saturdays,
I definitely think thats something i should have known about it as I probably wouldn't have taken the job, anyway I have been there a couple of months, and i totally hate working Saturdays, I go out on the weekends all the time, but i can't anymore, because by the time i get home on a Saturday the day is basically over, and I have to go to bed really early on Friday night, is there anything I can do to get out of it? I'm considering quitting, but I really like the job and people its just working Saturdays that gets me. What do i do?

Well you could certainly ask, but as someone that's been in management for 5 years, I would say your chances are pretty slim, and you run the risk of coming off as a spoiled brat if you even try.
Think from your boss' perspective first; even if you had the luxury of giving Saturdays off, how do you think you would go about giving those privileges (and yes, it's a privilege) out? Would you give that privilege to your senior employees that have given you years of service and you know that you can rely on them 100%, or instead to a punk 17 year old that you just hired so that he can still go out and party?
Catch my drift? Companies assign schedules based on seniority, and when you're new you are the bottom of the rung when it comes to privileges like getting Saturdays/Holidays off. You just need to accept that, and remember that I'm sure they had 3 or 4 other guys that they interviewed that were just as qualified as you, and that would be happy to work Saturdays without complaint. You'd be wise to humble yourself a little bit here.
I get that you're young and you want to enjoy your youth while you can. I'll even write on here many times encouraging young kids to not try to grow up too fast, and enjoy the fun loving, semi careless lifestyle that they are afforded by being young.
However, there's a difference between "wanting" to enjoy that time, and "expecting" an employer to accommodate that. An employer's responsibility is only to the company, so he has zero obligations to make special requests for employees, especially when they come from people with zero experience in the company.
That means that you just have to decide which is more important to you, the job or the free time. If you want to keep the free time as your priority, then there's nothing wrong with finding a different job that fits your schedule better (assuming of course you don't necessarily "need" this particular job.) I don't know how this job pays in comparison to other jobs (it sounds like it could be good), but if you can find a comparable job with a more flexible schedule, then give a two week's notice at this job and go move to the other.
But it's just bad form to start making special requests like this at a job you just started, and it's not the right attitude to have for someone that's just starting in the workforce.
Hope that helps bro.
