Why do people in service jobs call people terms of endearment like honey, sweets, hun, love, baby.?

Waitresses, cashiers, desk clerks I've run into will say "here you go honey" or "anything else sweety" it's meaningless and annoying. I'm not your honey. They say that to everyone so why would they think it's polite? Or professional? Do you do that? I want to punch you in the face

It's traditional. The tradition started in the South (of the US) and has spread and endured for millennium.
