Will updating my iOS ruin my phone?

I am using an iPhone 5S, which had not been updated since 2013. It's very old and I fear if I update it now, something could go wrong. Should I be worried or go for it?

    The T-Mobile guy told my friend it might improve your battery life.

    the iPhone 5 that I use as a iPod Touch (only on WiFi) seems to be okay using ios 10.2

    I might not update the first day of the update but would update.
