Is the nikon D40 still a good camera?

So I'm looking at getting a D40 as a camera I can use to take pictures of cars since I'm a huge car lover. I have a kodak eazy share z990. As my first dslr. It takes decent pictures but want something I can work better with. Found a D40 for a good price and wanted to know if it's still a good camera to work with. Get me some lens and go from there. And once I get at taking pictures upgrade to something more expensive. Since the D40 is an older camera I wanted to see if it was worth it. Oh it's only 60$ nothing wrong with it just owner doesn't use it anymore.

How do you know that there is nothing wrong with it? Seller say so? Make sure to fully check it out BEFORE you part with your cash.

If the camera is in fully operating condition, it is capable of excellent photos. And it has all the tools to allow you to learn the basics and beyond of photography. Getting a basic 18-55mm kit lens is an excellent place to start.

It is still a useable camera, way past its prime though. It will still produce decent images.

The description you give is a generic "I stole this and know nothing about it" tag from Craig's List, I'd be very careful about making the purchase.
