If you didn't have any income this year, the 1098T is useless to you. If your parents are still claiming you as a dependent, give it to them. It's a form from your college stating how much your tuition was and any scholarships or grants you received to offset it. It's used to figure out an education credit. If you are independent and the scholarship/grants are more than your tuition, you can claim them as income and then use the tuition (+required books, etc) to receive a credit. Go to www.irs.gov and put "education credits" in the search box.

this form is NOT income, it is a report of tuition or educational expenses you paid

it it tuition give the form to your parents they can claim it

if you didn't work and have no income to report, this form is informational for you

Getting a form doesn't mean you have to file.

Look at the 1098-T. Does it show scholarships and grants in excess of the tuition? If yes and this is more than $6300, you need to file because this is taxable income to a dependent.

If the tuition is more and you are dependent, give the form to your parent.

If the tuition is more and you are not a dependent, then see IRS pub 970 for more information for the American Opportunity Credit.

You do not need to file unless there is some other reason.

Even if you did not need to file, you would still have received this form. The person who sends this form is not allowed to know whether or not you need to file and must send it in both situations.

If you didn't work are you been supported by someone else (ie parents?). If so, the education credits or deduction is claimed on their tax return and not yours.
