Can I skip school to go to court?

A police offer was going throw my school parking lot putting everyone's plates in his computer, I was in bad luck because my plates recently expired. He waited for school to finish and me to get out and he pulled me and his cop buddies pulled over a couple other kids from the parking lot. Anyways, he gave me a ticket because it's my responsibility as the "driver" to ensure the correct plates even though it's under my dads name. The court date is in a Wednesday during school hours. It's my first court date and I just turned 18 less than a month ago. I was just wondering if it was fine for me to skip school to go because I doubt that it will be a short thing.

It is fine with me. I doubt it would be an excused absence. You would really be much better off just paying the ticket. You will likely have to anyway.

Very likely you can settle this before your court date and after school by taking the appropriate paperwork to the court clerk. To make sure that this is an available procedure for the ticket you got call the court clerk and ask. If you must appear in court then your school must give you that time off. That however doesn't mean that you don't have to make up the assignments due for the classes you miss.

You have the correct plates, it's just that the plates registration was expired. The cop is wrong, it's not your responsibility to update the car, it's the registered owner that's responsible. Therefore your dad should go with you with the newly registered car plates to have your citation dismissed and miss school.

Since you are 18 you can write your own note to excuse the absence.
