Americans: What is an "exempted" school?
I was reading Tim Conway's autobiography and he mentions going to "an exempted school" in Chagrin Falls, OH. I asked Google and came up empty. What are these schools "exempted" from?

In Ohio, school districts are classified as either city school districts, exempted village school districts, or local school districts. City and exempted village school districts are exempted from county boards of education, while local school districts remain under county school board supervision.
In other words an "exempted school" is "exempt" from control of the county board of education.
