What's that tall, clear plastic thing you sometimes see around a drummer called?

    More commonly called a "drum screen".  Usually made of acrylic glass.

    More seriously, it depends on the application, but it's usually called a "drum shield." It's to isolate / temper the sound of the drums a bit so the overall stage volume can be lower. Or in recording situations to isolate the drums from other mics.
