Fellow Christians, how should we personally respond to another believer who asserts that?
we "reject God's Word" if we have a different idea about how much time passed between the "days" of creation in Genesis chapter 1 than they do?
What is the best, most Christ-following way to respond to another believer who tries to judge our *faith itself*(!) based on their own particular reading of a non-crucial timeline question like that??
Example: From GotQuestions.org, in an otherwise good answer about forms of idolotry the writer throws in his pet theory with a big judgement:
"We reject God’s Word and His description of how He created the heavens and the earth, and we accept the nonsense of evolution..."
Wow. How do you personally handle this from another believer?
I believe all of Genesis chapter 1, sincerely, but I read it differently than this person did. That's not a lack of faith(!!) on my part...... When I think billions of years passed during verse 1, even before verse 2, this is *not* "rejecting God's Word"!!
Anon, I think you've got something -- don't argue it with them. This is in fact what I've done in person in recent years, and I think it is good advice. We don't argue about what does not have any bearing at all on salvation. I trust God. He did whatever He did which is not written there, and we don't know all things about it, and I'm content with our lack of full and complete knowledge about non-communicated details.
Oleg, thank you, this is a very relevant passage you quote. :-)

I'd avoid speculation on time frames altogether these things in no way help us to lead a Christian life! Concentrate on the gospel of Jesus Christ and making known Jehovah's name and Jesus soon to come kingdom.
Talking about stuff that happened 6000 years ago detracts from how shall I obey Jesus right here right now.

You have two options. You can either prove that you're on the right side of truth or you can let it slide. Give them a polite smile and thank them for their opinion.
Edit:
I personally believe you're wrong, but if you're sincere, God the Spirit will guide you into all truth. I don't need to make you perfect. It's not my job.

sectarian beliefs are not true from church to church. first rule of interpretation is that no one has an individual interpretation; it must come from God, or Jesus lips, o the Holy Ghost. and of course not all angels are the holy ones sent from the Lord.
no one that is a believer should reject GODs' word !
\ and I think its possible to prove not all bible translation and versions are exactly preserved as the total of Gods word nor are they the same things that were written. but I find if a person is going to deceive people it will be at the pulpit, not from reciting the bible or other scriptures.
I know jesus rebuked people to calling things that are a sin, when they are not sin. I know he also rebuked the idea that a man would be condemned for a "word".
on the one hand, ive seen where there is a debate over verses and words, that the self righteous will point at others for saying a word out of place, or misquoting, and yet when the other hand points back at their translation the deflect from the guilt and say its same meaning of words. first rule of debate, Don't dispute over words. if salvation is by grace alone, then we don't even need a bible. but we do have a bible and we have teacher who teach opinions, most do not teach revelation and prophecy.

Not every Christian will want to answer this question. Some may not even be Christians. When a seed grows? Does it not Evolve? That depends upon our own understanding....... When it comes to Gods timeline for Creation? We do not know how Time passes in Eternity.. We live in DST.. To God one of our Years could be thousands to Him...!!

Of interest...
2:23 Avoid these futile and silly speculations, understanding that they only give rise to quarrels;
2:24 and a servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but has to be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient.
2:25 He has to be gentle when he corrects people who dispute what he says, never forgetting that God may give them a change of mind so that they recognise the truth and
2:26 come to their senses, once out of the trap where the devil caught them and kept them enslaved.

I am shocked when a so-called Christian says they do not believe the Genesis account of creation.
Or the so-called Christians who inappropriately says they do not believe the six days of creation were 24-hour days by misquoting the bible verse that says "a day is like a 1000 years to God." (That verse only purports to illustrate that God is timeless, and lives outside of our time dimension.)
This is the equivalent to calling God a liar.
The Genesis account goes to some length to explain, "and there was night and there was morning, another day." It is as if the author went out of his way to make sure the reader understood these were 24-hour days.
God says he created the universe with everything in it in six 24-hour days. And that is also what Jesus believes and Jesus was there.
So how can anyone who claims to be a Christian say otherwise? It is the same thing as calling God a liar.
If God had the ability to speak the entire universe into existence, without exerting any effort whatsoever, then why would he need more time to get this done? It makes no sense whatsoever.
How can anyone who calls God a liar, at the same time say that they believe in Jesus as their personal savior?
Maybe this is where we apply the consequences of Matthew 7:21-23?

Let me tell you something VERY SHOCKING about the condition of our Seminaries, and how corrupted they have become. When someone wants to pursue a career in ministry, they typically attend a Seminary to obtain advanced biblical training and instruction.
Out of roughly 105 seminaries in the USA, there are only about five (5) of them that actually believe and teach a literal interpretation of the Genesis account of creation. I find that SHOCKINGLY DISTURBING.
Satan has been hard at work to corrupt the minds of people who purport to be "believers."
"The god of this world (who is Satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God." (2 Corinthians 4:4)
So don't be surprised if you hear someone claim they studied theology at a Seminary, and they also believe in evolution. NOW YOU KNOW WHY.

What Authority are you using to verify your claim that the day specifically stated by God in the bible...is anything but a day? Are you trying to make God's version of the story fit with man's?
Well let me help you. God created a 4 billion year old universe 6000 years ago.
There is no rule that says God has to make everything new. He made Adam old and Mature, Eve too, and all the animals ....so why not the earth? Create it old, run i and ready to support life, including a fossil history that never really happened
Unless you have some God given authority I do not know about then you must accept that when God says "A Day" He means "A DAY"
Creation is not a theory...it is a fact and it happened just as God says it did
You can accept that, or you can reject that. God Said I made it all in 6 days , not 6 days that weren't really days but epochs so that the earth could slowly make itself
answer to update....again what authority are you using to put a billion years between vs 1 and 2?
I tried that too....until I read what Jesus said
Mark 10:
6 But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’
From the beginning of creation, not a billion years later
