I lost track. Failed the test three times and passed on the fourth. Never driven since.

The only tip would be have 'double lessons' - for the last test (10 years after the last failure) I had about 20 two hour sessions and actually made considerable progress, an hour isn't long enough. There used to be a theory that you needed the same number of hours as your age, which was about right in my case, ignoring the earlier fiascoes (which involved writing off the driving school car). I took the test just before the Theory thing came in, and didn't have access to a car for practice.

My advice would be to start as young as you can - it doesn't get any easier when you get older. I should have learned before I went to university but then I didn't have any money.

Some people swear by intensive cramming courses, but that may be over the top.

I never had any formal driving lessons at all.

I'd learnt the Highway Code and DSA Driving Manual by the time I was 14.

I spent a few years driving on my own on private land to figure out vehicle controls.

Once I got my provisional licence, I drove around on the roads for a week with my Dad in the passenger seat.

I passed my test first time - had a full licence within a month of turning 17.
