Android phones used to be able to use what is called an MHL adapter from microUSB to HDMI. Certain Samsung phones like my S3 also required a 5-pin to 11-pin microUSB adapter. But with phones being able to do various types of mirroring or things like Chromecast which stream the video directly over WiFi and just use your phone as a remote control, I don't think newer phones like my J7 can use the MHL adapter.

But I don't remember what I did with my MHL adapter, so I cannot confirm that. I normally simply view Hulu, Netflix, or YouTube on the 32" 1080p HTDV that I use as a monitor for my PC (running Linux, usually not Windows) using a 2.1 PC speaker system with subwoofer.

Check your manual or find the specifications for your particular phone. Most do not have an easy way to output video.
