How does dating or courtship work in Muslim cultures?

The perception is that it's mainly one sided where the man just takes the women or her family gives her to a man with finances or influences. Is this correct? Do young Muslim women have freedom to choose a mate and reject those they are not attracted to regardless of family pressure?

Yes.. In love marriage, both the girl & boys talk with each other, but it stop there most of the time, just talking & nothing more.. no holding hands, kissing etc.. In arranged marriage, it is the same as well, you can still interact with the man before committing yourself for the rest of your life.. you at least know what you are getting into..

Muslim women have the right to agree to a marriage and to offer marriage proposals themselves. The way a woman agrees to a proposal is by remaining silent when the time of deciding is upon her.

With regards to what you said about men, yes men take care of the expenses and spend on the wife, and what the wife earns is her own money she can do with as she pleases although she should help her husband with it as well. A woman's Wali (father usually) must also agree to the marriage. Men are the maintainers of women (in all situations, kafir or believing men).

With regards to your statement about "freedom," our perception of freedom is completely different. No one is free from Allah ta'ala, you are in his dominion and are his slave, if you do not believe in him and his religion (Islam) he will punish you in his prison (hell) forever, if you do believe and accept his religion: Islam, then he will reward you with paradise forever. Freedom to sin is not freedom, and there are Islamic laws that need to be obeyed.
