Anything that you now write can be done on word. So reports, essays, projects, experimental write ups etc. It allows you to present projects in the same way that a professional would. It makes high quality presentation possible to everyone and therefore first impressions are normally good. You can import diagrams, photographs, tables, accounts, databases and even drawings etc into the document. You can underline, make text bold or/and italic so as to emphasis a part of the document. It has a word and grammar checker within the program so this allows your work to be much improved. It also helps the marker or teacher as it is very easy to read which is not always easy with the hand written word.

That depends which version of Word the student is TRYING to use.
