Is it safe to use essential oils in lip balm?

I am making homemade lip balm and Im confused on what Im supposed to use for flavoring. I put in a drop of vanilla extract which was good but what about a peppermint flavored one? It says on the peppermint oil "do not use on skin". I even read that citrus oils can multiply damage done by the sun to your skin. So if I wanted to make an orange flavored lip balm, I am afraid that could be dangerous. So whats the deal? If essential oils are unsafe what can I use to flavor my lip balms?

With essential oils, you can't use them on your skin in their concentrated form without risking irritation, so the warning is talking about putting it on your skin directly from the bottle. If you use a few drops diluted in a lip balm, it should be fine.
