So what is the volume of sand in the timer?
Volume (V) of a cone with a base radius (r) and a vertical height (h) is given by:
V = ⅓πr²h
Looking at your diagram the cone of sand has a base radius of r = 10 mm and height h = 24 mm
V = ⅓ * π * 10² * 24
V = 2513 mm³
Falling at a rate of 50 mm³/second it will take:
time = (2513 / 50) = 50.27 seconds
