I eventually resorted to putting my vulnerable bushes and shrubs in wire cages or plastic mesh. Not so easy to do with birds because the mesh has to be a lot tighter than it does with deer!
But eventually I just started planting bushes and shrubs that the critters didn't like to eat. It took some experimentation to figure out which these were -- a couple year's worth, actually -- but I eventually arrived at a solution.
I know that's not an alternative for growing something you like, like blueberries, so you might be back to screening them in. One other possibility though is to get some outdoor cats. Then build a platform along the back of your berry bushes where they cats can perch. Cats can be death on birds and are great at keeping them away. But now you'll have vet bills...

When we grew berries we put netting over the plants and staked it down.

http://www.predatorpee.com/ sounds weird but people swear by it. won't help with the birds though. you'll need some sort of scare method. http://www.birdcontrolpro.com/bird_control_product...
