Your doctor works for YOU, not the other way around.
Yes, intolerable side effects are a very good reason to be taken off medication.

Don't play doctor on your own. Speak to your doctor and let him know what problems you are having with your medication and he'll try to find something that works for you

Talk with your doctor. Your healthcare provider should be a partner in your care not a dictator. They can only help you if you are honest about your needs, symptoms and side effects. Don't stop your prescribed medication without consulting a doctor as they have the medical expertise to discontinue drugs safely. Some medications discontinuation syndromes are worse than any side effect or the original symptoms you are trying to treat. Serious complications, even death have occurred from sudden stoppage of Xanax. Be sure to give your doctor the opportunity to take you off safely. Depending upon how long and at what dose you have been taking, you may need to taper down or use another longer half-life medication to stop Xanax.
