You need hard training to make hard men and women. It is that simple. If you do not make your military members hard you might as well not have a military and just say citizens your on your own, defend yourselves. Because if you do not harden them essentially your just putting citizens in cammies without expecting them to change. You have to be hard mentally and physically to be effective.

Because assignments to "hot zones" are usually very hard, strict and tough, and hard, strict and tough training gives you a better chance of surviving.

I would hardly call army training hard especially since the BCT/AIT graduation rates are 90-100%. The key to surviving in the military is to not quit, listen to your superiors, show up on time in the right uniform, and pass your PT Test thats it!

Because they need to be. You're being trained to potentially go into a situation where damn little makes sense and the only thing that will help you get through it is your training. Training that is pounded into you so hard and so well that you don't have to think about it...you just do it.
