Why are companies asking employees to speak Spanish?
English speakers cannot find work here in good ol' America.
Spanish speakers are refusing to take English as a Second Language classes which are free, and so its okay to keep English speakers out of work?
I can't award anyone the best answer so far.

well, why are you acting like this is a normal thing?
aside from that, let's play devil's advocate........................... you decided not to get a degree, which means you must work in customer service, or other kind of retail service........................... if a company wants to service its customers better, they can add "speak their language" to the list........................... if you don't speak the language of the customer, you for the life of me cannot do customer service, or retail...........................

Nelly J, your attitude is simplistic. No one said prospective employees had to speak Spanish as their first language. Employers are looking for people who can communicate with a growing segment of their customers. Go learn Spanish!! In addition to helping you get a job, it will make you a more broad-minded person.
There are far more speakers of Spanish in this country than there are speakers of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, etc. And that's why employers want Spanish-speaking employees. Eventually they may also be looking for people who speak the other languages.
I agree that residents who speak only Spanish should learn English. But employers want to satisfy their customers. They're not in this for philosophical reasons. They're in it for the money.
There are no free English-language courses where I live. Perhaps they are where you live but even so, that means Spanish-speaking people have to have the time to take the course. So many of these people have low-paying jobs and work 10 -12 hours a day just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. So it's a problem that doesn't have a simplistic solution.
And, as Tony R has said, there is no law that says English is the official language of this country.

Well the problem is there are no laws about English being the official language for the US, so you really have no legal grounds for such unless that is changed. I guess join a "make English the official language" group. There was a movement to stop French being spoken in the 1940's to the 60's, by saying kids in school not speaking English would be expelled and other such actions, but that practice has mostly died out. There used to be areas of the US where you heard almost only French, little English, but that was stamped out by such actions as expulsion I mentioned.

If a company is dealing with Spanish-speaking customers, clients, advisers or suppliers, that sort of thing, it may be essential that they are fluent in the language.

😉 Bonjour, Hello
It's probably they need to speak it for their job. I don't see another logical explanation.
