Started my car and it was really jumpy I popped the hood and the engine seemed odd is there away to tell if the head is blown?

If you have misfires you start with replacing the spark plugs and plug wires if you don't have coils over each spark plug.

There are some simple things to check.
Look for oil in your coolant.
Look for milky engine oil.
If you have either of those, it's usually a head gasket that's failed and allowing them to mix.
There are more definite tests you can do, but those take some tools and know how.

If the head gasket were "blown" (not intact) the engine would not start because there would be no compression. <- general rule (at least eons ago). You should get a compression check on the cylinders ... or maybe 1 spark plug is fouled up ... or a gasoline fuel injector is blocked.
