How long will tool manufacturers continue to make replacement batteries for their cordless tools?
I'm thinking about buying into a set of cordless tools: drill, impact driver, circ. saw, etc...Right now I've only got a cordless drill and the rest are corded. I've thought it was a shame that your tool became useless after the battery failed, and replacement batteries cost as much as new kits. But, I'm pretty impressed by the new cordless tools, and I am willing to spend money occasionally on new batteries. My question is how long do you think companies will offer replacement batteries? Some of my corded tools are 15+ years old and working fine. I don't want to have paperweights because I can't find batteries.
Brands I am considering are Dewalt, Bosch, Milwaukee

there is not a common set period for having to supply spares in law in most countries. things change e.g. upgrades etc and market forces drives supply and price.
i have a DE Walt drill. though I can still ( just ) about get spare battery for it.costs are very high and it makes more sense to get a whole new drill.
some parties are in process of taking an old battery pack.stripping it and replacing internals. this is limited though and again will driven by demand . odds are we ought to if keeping toll a long time? simply get new. a sit will come with warranty and likely be better tool.

Buying by name brand is the best way to go. They last longer, but the replacement batteries are more expensive. It's true that the batteries cost about as much as the whole kit did when it was new, but that's the way it is and we all end up with a lot of "paper weight" lying around. If you buy a name brands like DeWalt or Bosh etc. you probably will have replacement batteries for them way into the future.

It has been my experience that by the time two drill motor batteries will outlast the mechanical components of a reasonably good drill. I prefer the power of an electric circular saw but for drills the ease of use of cordless units pretty much makes it worthwhile to replace them a bit more frequently that corded units.

the replacement batteries are as much and more than some cordless tools ======= I suggest that you buy only those batt-op tools that you will use and stick the corded type tools that you know are dependable ==== unless you put your tool batteries on a charging timer [[ as I have found helpful ]] when you go to use them the batt-power will be low ....................

I don't know how long they keep making the same batteries but when the batteries died on my cordless drill a few years ago, when the drill was maybe 12-13 years old, or more, and I couldn't find replacements in my local stores, I found some on ebay and they were dirt cheap. They are still working 8 years later.

It's a different mind set. I have switched to cordless simply for convienence. It's worth it to me to but replacement batteries or even upgrade the kit so I don't have to drag extension cords around.
