Is Thalassemia a permanent disqualifier for non prior enlistment into the US Navy?

    No, it depends on your blood work. If your hematocrit is normal, you're good to go. It's only an outright DQ for flying status.

    Thalessmia causes a form of anemia. It doesn't matter what caused it, anemia is a DQ from military service.

    which thalassemia, major or minor? i remember this being asked many times on a forum, i believe its a PDQ. you should speak with a recruiter, any clotting or bleeding disorders are generally disqualifying, as you cannot predict when it happens, and it wont be easy to treat while in the military.

    I have a friends who has a daughter who was diagnosed with this when she was about 5years and she has never been treated for it and last time she saw a doc was over 5 years ago. I didn't see anything in the 40-501 that would disqualifier her. Any NAVY recruiter in the OC can you tell me. Thanks
