Was it a mistake to take my car to the mechanic?

So a couple months ago, my car was leaking steering fluid and I took it there to get it fixed.

It was working fine until today. On my lunch break at work I noticed the wheel was tough to turn again and there was a puddle under the car. The puddle had a yellow tint which is what I noticed the first time around when my car leaked in the past.

My car is from 2006, so it's not super old or anything.

But my parents are angry with me for taking it in again for this issue. They think I'm lying about this.

The moment my mom tested my car, my steering was fine. But a couple hours before, it was so stiff to turn. It wasn't at the point of making any noise though.

Did I make a mistake by taking my car in?

What happens if there is no issue? Will my mechanic be annoyed with me for "crying wolf" (my dad's words). I don't want to waste anyone's time.

If any parts such as the power steering pump were replaced there should be a 12 month/ 12,000 mile warranty on the repair work. I'd go back and have them tell you what's wrong. Parents are not mechanics!

When your mom tested it, was it warm? When you had no power assist, was it cold? You might have a new problem, as in a worn out rack and pinion unit. It used to be called "morning sickness" because it took a while for the rack to warm up enough to swell the seals so the power assist would work. There are chemical additives available at the auto parts store that may help.

Also, as someone else stated yellow is usually coolant. Best to check all your fluid levels. Don't tell me you can't because you're a girl. No excuse, you should know how to do simple maintenance to your car.

A yellow tint sounds like antifreeze. Power steering fluid is usually reddish.

Check your coolant level, and your power steering fluid level -- or have someone else check them. While you're at it, check all the fluid levels, e.g. engine oil, transmission, brake, etc.

Start the car, open the hood, idle until warm and let one of your parents turn the steering wheel all the way left and all the way right for about 5 minutes while another parent watches for a leak. Let them play mechanic.

That may have been a patch up that later failed. I'd be upset and feel cheated, but sometimes a shop will offer a cheap attempt to patch a problem with the warning that it may not work. You make a choice against advice that the right repair. It's like any gamble. You didn't tell us that happened, but you know the truth. Anyone wants their car in good running order and when things go wrong a mechanic should be trusted to repair it, or reject an impossible job. To heck with him getting annoyed. If he did the job wrong, you deserve better quality and should ask for it every time.

Ask your mechanic to see if theres a possible crack in the reservoir. And go on a test drive with your mother while you drive it, drive atleast 30 mins.
