How to portray animals on stage?
I m writing a play about workers in a slaughterhouse. There would be so many animals in the real scene that I think it would be too inconvenient to have prop animals, but if there isn t anything to suggest besides sound, I think it won t be as realistic. Maybe there s something more abstract or involving lights or images I could do?

Not sure the technical term, but could you use cut-out shapes over the lights to cast animal-shaped shadows?

Broadway's Lion King show portrayed herds of gazelles by having three cutouts of gazelles held up/moved by leaping dancers. Try looking that up; it should be visible in commercials and such.
If you don't want to go that route, you could try sound effects in addition to vivid narration. Even if there's not something actually onstage, narration that appeals to the senses (describes the sound, smell, temperature, etc) can really aid in bringing a scene to life in your audience's mind.
