How to set maximum allowed resolution on nvidia GPU?
I have a 1366x768 monitor and i used dvi to vga cable in past which worked wonders but it broke and now im stuck with vga to vga cable with dvi adaptor as my gpu (gtx 570) only has dvi and HDMI
and since im using the adaptor monitor is detected as generic non-pnp display and allows resolutions higher than 1366x768 as probably becasue of adaptor it cant see what monitor it is anyhow when i launch certain games they launch as max resolution i suppose which is 2560x1440 and thats waaay higher than my monitor resolution therefore i get out of signal range message so my question is how to i set max allowed resolution to be 1366x768

All such settings are controlled by "display properties".
On windows 7, you right click the desktop and on windows
10 you click on start/settings/system/display. This is and has always been the basic resolution default setup for a gpu.
It works in conjunction with your gpu control panel software.
In your post, you speak more as if the cables are the gpu. Cables are replaceable and adapters for output and inputs are cheap and available. You can buy adapters to go on the ends of any cable type to convert it to work with most monitor/gpu outputs. HDMI is the best output.
Also, when using "display properties" it shows you the highest and best-recommended setting based on how you have connected it. It does not look at your overall capabilites- it just detects the max your cabling allows.- with your monitor input. BUT it cannot tell you have better outputs or inputs available. If you connect the poorest out put to the poorest input "display monitor" will recommend a lower setting. If you connect an HDMI output to the monitors DVI or HDMI input, you will get higher settings available. You may have options other than what you listed.
How does a dvi/vga cable break? It is secured by screws at each end. Replacing it is the best option- eBay and Amazon are cheapest.
However, If you set up your monitor/gpu
software and then you install a game, the game will detect the system setting for you. Once the settings are saved by the game it will NOT look for max resolution from then on- it will use the saved settings and if the original gpu/monitor setup allowed a very high resolution but now you have changed hardware- then you must reinstall the game ( to prevent out of range message) and to allow it to detect the current max and to save it. Most of the above is just food for though- Good Luck!
