No, they don't just let anyone be a model. He's not conventionally attractive, and he's not thin/slim.

He would be more attractive with a shave but that is just my preference. Some people like stubble. He could be a model for some styles of clothes but probably not for high fashion.

He has a totally vapid facial expression, and ears like an elephant.

He looks fine, but he doesn't have the bone structure for modeling. I get the impression that he might have a bulkier build than models can have.
That's OK. There are a lot of beautiful women who couldn't be models either, because they don't meet the very specific physical criteria.
