The biggest and best-known drone company is DJI. They make a line of drones called the Phantoms. The latest is the Phantom 4. I have a Phantom 3 and I love it. They make a smaller drone called the Mavic which is also nice, especially if you want to carry it a long way in a backpack.

These drones literally fly themselves. They're not about drone flying, they're really just aerial camera platforms. You put them in a certain place in the sky and they will stay right there until the batteries run out. Or you can program a route for them on Google Maps and they will move like robots from this point to that point, with the camera pointed this way or that way. They can focus on one point on the ground as they fly by. They can do automatic circles around a point with the camera focused on it, so you can get a full-circle view of a house or something. So unlike, say, a 'racing drone', they take no skill at all. They're legally restricted to 400 feet in the US but they'll go much higher (and if you're above a radio tower or building, you can be 400 feet above -that-.

The cameras on these things are great. Mine is just HD but the later ones have 4K. They take video or still photos, which you control from the ground or in your program (i.e. 'fly to this point, this altitude, orient the camera in this direction, then take a photo, or turn on the video recorder'). The camera is stabilized with a gimbal so it doesn't tilt with the drone, so you get a very 'cinematic' helicopter-like view.

You can see out the cam on your cellphone, which attaches to the controller. Or you can use a tablet and see much better. Plus, of course, the drone is recording it onto a micro SD card.

You can get a nice Phantom 3 or 4 used on Craigslist for maybe $600-700. The Mavic is a lot newer so you might not find a used one. A new one is about $1400.

They fly for about 20-25 minutes. If that's not long enough, there are fixed-wing drones now. Check out the 'Parrot Disco'. It can stay in the air for more like 45 min., and it does everything the quadcopters do except hover (or go backwards or sideways, of course). You could build a model airplane with all those same capabilities a little cheaper, but you'd have to know something about it. It's a lot easier to just buy one and fly it.
