Bike for commuting, anyone got any recommendations?

I'm starting college soon, and I'll be commuting. The commute there is 7.5 miles each way and I'll probably be cycling around the large campus too, so I'll probably be covering about 18 or so miles a day.

I have a max budget of £500, I'm a 5'5 female. Should I get a hybrod or a cyclocross bike as the roads aren't very good around here.

Yeah, go to the store and try both out, the one that makes you feel comfortable, there's no wrong answer, it would depend on you!

When my girls started college we bought them hybrid bikes. Attached a book rack to the back. We then attached a large stainless basket on to the rack. Plastic crate would work too. They could carry there books and day pack in the box..... just toss them in. They could throw in a couple of grocery bags from the local market too.

Both are good choices and will suit your needs as will a hardtail mtb. But for your needs I think a hybrid fits the bill better

in your budget makes sure there is room for a helmet, gloves, good lock and the fenders fitted on the bike. in the UK fenders would be a must for whatever bike for a daily driver. A rack would also be desirable

quick look at at evans and found this

reasonable bike that seems to hit allot of needs. Not a racer but certainly capable for commuting and on budget

with the 35 tires running the pressure a bit lower will soak up road noise and chatter.

If maintained this bike should give you a decent commuter on budget for your entire schooling

I would look for a bike like this but ride them first not all bikes fit and it is more than important that it does

I always have one basic recommendation... Go with your gut feeling! No one can tell via the internet if you'll prefer a hybrid or CX bike. That's your decision after a few TEST RIDES. Both have roughly the same size tires. I will add this though... It's usually easier to add fenders onto a hybrid than it is a CX bike.

The way it's been raining in St. Louis for the last THREE DAYS, right now I wish I had fenders on my CX bike. Here's some from Evans Cycles in your price range. https://www.evanscycles.com/bikes/hybrid-bikes_c?p...

    For utility-minded riding, get a utility-minded bike.

That means gears, fenders and a rack.

You can likely buy a hybrid already equipped like that.

If you get a CX, you'll have to have those parts fitted.

Not all people like drop bars, even if a CX bike has a chance of being a little faster.
