When changing the hard drive in my ps3, can i transfer my data over with an external drive?

Update:

I have a new hard drive i want to put in my ps3, I would like to know tho if i buy an enclosure for the hard drive thats in the ps3 when i put the new one in the ps3 can i then just transfer the data over when i plug the old hard drive into the system? I have too much dlc and several games downloaded and i will not wait for all them to download again. It was simple putting a new hard drive in my ps4 cause i just copied save data to a flash drive and then transfered over, but ps3 has too much

Yes, but you have to make the backup first. The PS3 only accepts USB 2.0 external hard drives that are FAT32 formatted. From there, you can do a system back up. Then swap out the hard drive, load a new firmware, create a temporary user, then use that to restore the backup.

After all that, then your system should be back to where it was before you started, only with more available hard drive space.

So yes, but you need another hard drive, not just the old PS3 hard drive in an enclosure. And if you try to use a USB 3.0 hard drive into the PS3, the system won't recognize it.
