Is it time to put my dog to sleep?

I have a 15 year old yorkiepoo. She has cancer and has a large visible red tumor on her belly. She's had cancer for the last 5 months now and the tumor is starting to stink, I am certainly no vet but i have a bad feeling that her time is almost up. She is still filled with energy but I am torn between putting her to sleep so she dosen't have to suffer and keeping her alive as much as possible. So do you think it's time I put her to sleep?

No one here should tell you when to put your freind down. You will have to make that decision. It is not easy.

If it helps, I witnessed 2 of 3 of our Sheps last moments. It is painless.

    Discuss this with your vet.

They wii be able to judge the severity of the pain.

Put her down before she suffers.

The first thing you need before you make this decision, is confirmation from your vet that he has nothing more to offer your dog. Vets hate being defeated. If there is nothing, then please give her peace before the pain becomes impossible to deal with. We never allowed lingering - at least we can do this for our much loved pets so they don't continue to live with pain.

I guess when this happens, we are all left with a bit of 'did I get the time right' but again, this is where the opinion of a trusted vet helps. Quality of life must be paramount and so if the down days start to outnumber the up days, it's time.

that IS the worse thing about having ANY pet ,,folks MUST make that choice. Owners MUST consider the animal's quality of life , the pain / condition WILL get worse, OWNERS must not be selfish about it, it IS about the animal. So sorry, but YOU WILL have to let go NOW.

Did the vet say she was in pain? If she's full of energy, moving around, happy, I would say let her stay for a bit longer.

I put my old Labrador to sleep last year, she was old and very immobile. She would slip and fall and couldn't get back up. She could hardly move and she spent a lot of time sleeping, so we put her down to put her out of misery.

IF your dog is still loving life and happy, keep her around!

It sounds like her quality of life is still good. Let her stick around until the quality of her life is no longer good. If she becomes incontinent, is in pain, or seems frightened or unhappy for no reason, that's when it's time.

If you think surgery will do her more harm in the long run, maybe it's time to consider putting her down. Good luck
