Traditionally, university campuses have been bastions of liberal thought. There are issues of freedom of speech versus public safety, however. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "Freedom of speech doesn't permit someone to falsely shout, 'Fire!' in a crowded theater."
Even so, there is controversy about that, since the case originated with a publication against the World War I draft.
These days, protests are generally allowed, if they have a permit and there's adequate security.
Riots are neither legal nor allowed, and need to be quickly suppressed by police, by strong means if necessary.
The problem is, peaceful protests can easily turn into riots, especially if bad people with an agenda are involved.

If I'm paying tens of thousands of dollars for my kid to get a degree, I damn well don't want that kid skipping classes to attend any protest or riot, especially riot.
So I would insist that courses be taught even while the protests are going on. In other words, the school doesn't shut down because there are students out there wasting their mom's and dad's money.

Rioting should result in expulsion and charges be pressed. It's criminal behavior.

Protests are constitutionally guaranteed free speech. Vandalism and hurting people are not. They can throw all those antifa jerkoffs in jail as far as I'm concerned, and they may be funded by conservatives, since Breitbart already got caught trying to hire people to disrupt the Trump inauguration.
