Why do we stop crossing the road right in front of the car that will hit us?

When crossing the road why do we stop walking/running right in front of the car that is about to hit us when it would have been safer to continue walking/running as we would then be out of the car's way

    Because the car makes us pause to make a decision, we shouldn't but we can't help it
